The Air Force is Unconstitutional

One reason might be because conservatives are so concerned about the Hated Federal Deficit, which everyone seems to hate these days. But that can’t be, or else they would certainly consider dropping their opposition to the estate tax that takes money from really rich people when they’re dead and don’t need it anymore. I know there are various persuasive arguments to oppose to this particular tax, like the notion that the money has already been taxed once and we need to ensure an inherited aristocracy of wealth just like the one enjoyed by the British ruling class we once rebelled against. But surely these notions, however valid, wouldn’t overwhelm the practical need not to increase the Hated Federal Deficit? Not to mention firing Billy and Sally’s third-grade teacher?

These are the considerations that sent me to the Constitution. And there I found, along with the notion that slaves are just three-fifths of a man, the clauses of Article 1, Section 8 that say Congress shall have the power:

To raise and support Armies …

To provide and maintain a Navy …

After this, there’s a bunch of stuff about calling up militias to suppress insurrections and invasions, which was also news to me — I figured we’d use the Army or the National Guard, not the Hutaree and the Michigan Militia.

Now, you may say that there was no such thing as air travel in 1787. And you might point out that there’s an escape clause: “To make all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying to Execution the foregoing Powers …” But the Constitution is full of clauses like that. That doesn’t change the fact that there’s nothing specific about an Air Force, and there are specific things about the Army and the Navy.

I’m certain that Real Patriots would never Search out clauses in our Constitution that Support their positions and to Ignore the ones that contradict it. That would really be Shocking. What if they started doing that with the Bible?

So I expect the Tea Parties and the Republican Party to come out against the Air Force. Also the Marines.

And in 2012, we start the War Against Liberal Punctuation.
